Mobile app or responsive web app: what does your business need?

Start with how often people use the product

A first-time customer finding your services or making an occasional booking may benefit most from a fast responsive website. A field team working throughout the day may need a dedicated mobile experience. Frequency, context, and the task matter more than having an app for its own sake.

Check browser and device requirements

Responsive web apps are reached through a link and can serve desktop and mobile users from one product. Progressive web apps can add installation and some device capabilities, but support differs across browsers and operating systems.

An app-store product may be appropriate for deeper device integration or particular interaction requirements. Test camera, location, offline behavior, notifications, and background tasks on the target platforms before relying on them. None of these capabilities should be assumed from a platform label alone.

Include release and support in the decision

Mobile delivery can involve store accounts, review processes, release assets, device testing, and operating-system compatibility updates. Web delivery also needs hosting, monitoring, browser testing, and maintenance. Compare the whole operating model, including the backend shared by the experiences.

Scope the smallest complete journey

For a booking product, the first journey may be checking availability, requesting a slot, receiving confirmation, and managing a booking. Specify loading, unavailable, error, and cancellation states as well as the happy path.

A focused prototype can help test the journey before implementation. Choose the delivery platform after those requirements are understood, and agree which platforms and devices are included in the proposal.
